The Prep Baseball Report’s Muncie Pitching and Catching Camp on Dec. 30 featured several talented players ranging from 2009-2014 graduates. Players from all over the state met in Muncie for a great instructional camp. Next instructional camp will be February 7th in Fort Wayne. 2009 Graduates
1.) Sam Burke – C – Jeffersonville HS: With an athletic 6-foot-1 frame and a strong arm behind the dish, Burke (pictured right) emerged as the event’s top 2009 catcher and one of the better unsigned ones in the state. At the plate he showed occasional lift and drove the ball with power potential.
2.) Derek Mounsay – RHP – Centerville HS: Relatively unknown heading into the camp, Mounsay put his name on the map as an unsigned prospect to pay close attention to after the 5-foot-10 right-hander impressed with a heavy late moving 82 mph fastball to go along with a curve and changeup.
3.) John Clawson – C – Yorktown HS: This 5-foot-10, 185-pound backstop was impressive behind the dish. With a solid, athletic frame, Clawson (pictured right) has a mechanically solid swing with ability to drive the ball to all fields.
4.) Mace Beech – C – Homestead HS: Few received the ball better than Beech, who has excellent hands and solid catching mechanics. The 5-foot-10, 160-pound catcher showcased a balanced line drive swing.
2010 Graduates
1.) Justin O’Conner – C – Cowan HS: Much has been made about O’Conner’s pitching and shortstop abilities, but he showed another reason why he is ranked No. 1 by Prep Baseball Report in the 2010 class. The 6-foot-1 slugger put on a hitting display and quick transfer behind the plate.
2.) Matt Ring – RHP – Yorktown HS: A top-level athlete with a lean 6-foot frame, Ring (pictured right) has lots of upside. He showed an extremely loose arm and the ability to throw three pitches for strikes. His 81 mph fastball should see a velocity spike come the spring and summer months.
3.) TJ Hill – RHP – Shakamak HS: This 6-foot-1 right-hander pitched Shakamak to a state title last spring. Hill showcased a low 80s fastball with a tight late breaking curve.
4.) Jake Renkenberger – RHP – Homestead HS: The Spartans have a strong crop of prospects, especially with Renkenberger coming up through the ranks. Renkenberger displayed a quick arm action with a sharp breaking curveball.
5.) Ben Kennedy – LHP – Franklin Central HS: (Pictured right) As the event’s best left-handed pitcher, the 6-foot-1, 170-pounder showed a low ¾ arm slot with great late action on his fastball, good delivery and finish to his pitches.
2011, 2012, 2013 Graduates
1.) Stan Garner – RHP – 2011 – Greenfield Central HS: At 6-3, 175 pounds, Garner (pictured right) has big time potential to be a force in Indiana in the coming years. The athletic right-hander displayed an easy, loose, and quick arm action with great command.
2.) Elijah Jones – LHP – 2012 – Winchester HS: Smooth and easy left-hander looks to have a promising future on the mound.
3.) Aaron Wells – C – 2012 – Cowan HS: His compact balanced swing should see great strides as he get stronger.
4.) Zeth Tanner – RHP/C – 2013 – Yorktown HS: Another good Tanner coming up in Yorktown. Zeth proved to have a strong arm, hitting 77 mph as an 8th grader from a low ¾ arm slot, which created excellent movement on his fastball.
5.) Curtis Wilson – LHP – 2013 – Anderson HS: Long and lean bodied athlete already has the arm and pitches to be a highly recruited pitcher in the future. The 6-foot-1 lefty showcased a loose arm that worked effortlessly.
