Prep Baseball Report’s June 17th showcase in Indianapolis
Taylor C Seth Vautaw stood above the rest at the plate. Vautaw earned the event’s top hitter after the 2010 prospect displayed lightning-quick hands with power. The 5-foot-11, 177-pounder was also the top catcher with a strong arm and good footwork. Charlie Kolisek (pictured right), first baseman, from Roncalli was not far behind Vautaw, as the athletic right-hand hitter possessed good bat speed and power to all fields.
Unsigned senior Evan Luken, a Terre Haute South graduate, showed a smooth clean swing from the left-hand side. The 6-foot-2 left-handed hitter posted a .430 batting average this spring. Several hitters showed well at PBR’s showcase, to name a few were Delta HS 1B Brad Benbow (big strong LHH with good load and extension), AJ Boyll from North Central-Farmsburg HS (arguably the quickest bat), and Roncalli 2011 C Alex Ritchie. A couple left-handed hitters to keep a close eye on are SB St. Joseph’s Kaelin Guin (clean stroke with some pop) and 3B/RHP Caleb Mason from Northview HS.
2011 graduate Nick Lorenc (pictured right) wasn’t the hardest thrower at the event, but the silky smooth lefty earned the event’s top pitching prospect honors after the 5-foot-10, 150-pounder displayed three quality pitches. Lorenc’s fastball topped out at 81 mph with a sharp late breaking curve and plus change. Northview’s Caleb Mason showcased an 84 mph fastball with a quick loose arm. At 6-foot-3 and an arm that works like Mason’s, look for a spike in velocity in the months to come.
Hamilton Heights 6-foot-3 pitcher Andrew Knapp topped out at 81 mph from the left side and one of the best pure arms at the showcase was Brandon Wind a 2011 graduate from Lawrence Central.
In the outfield, Tariq Suboh (pictured right) stole the show, topping at 90 mph. Other outfielders with impressive arm strengths were Brandon Wind (86), Evan Luken (85), and unsigned senior Evan McCombs from Connersville topped out at 85 mph. In the infield, Charlie Kolisek and Brad Benbow were the top first basemen, possessing strong arms with athletic foot work around the bag. Anderson-Highland’s Dalten Hamilton and Caleb Mason topped the list at third. And in the close race for best middle infielder AJ Boyll, great lateral quickness, edged out Tariq Suboh, Hamilton SE Christian Leffler, Centerville’s Josh Parr, and Marquette’s David Vanderhere.
The catching group was the deepest… Seth Vautaw led the way, but SB St. Joseph’s Kaelin Guin (soft hands), Alex Ritchie, Tariq Suboh, Brownsburg’s 2011 Tyler Hampton, and Brandon Wind made it an interesting race.
Other notables:
Most polished 2011 graduate was Alex Ritchie (pictured right) of Roncalli. Ritchie showcased a quick compact swing at the plate and nearly flawless catching techniques. A highly ranked prospect Best arm at the showcase went to Tariq Suboh from Highland HS. Suboh topped 90 mph from the outfield and showcased his strong arm behind the plate, shortstop, and mound.
Unsigned 2009 graduates: Evan Luken, Terre Haute South, and Evan McCombs of Connersville both topped 85 mph from the outfield. Luken, a left-hand hitter, possesses a quiet approach and fluid quick bat while McCombs, right-handed hitter, showed a line drive swing to all fields.
