The Open ID Showcase on July 6 at Bethel College in Mishawaka had a talented mix of prospects. While there were several standout performances, FW Bishop Luers RHP Josh Ulrey, Guerin RHP Matt Pletzke and Penn 3B Kyle Schneider stood above the rest of the Class of 2011 prospects. There were also some stellar underclass prospects at the event; most notably, Crown Point SS Jake Lindeman and Delta C Taran Temple...
A look at the top players at the event:
Rankings reflect July 6 showcase performance only.
2011 Top Overall Prospects
1. Josh Ulrey, RHP, FW Bishop Luers HS: Unknown prior to the event, the 6-foot, 145-pound Ulrey emerged as one of the better pitching prospects in the Class of 2011. With a long, projectable frame, Ulrey showcased an extremely quick and loose arm. His fastball topped at 87 mph, which should increase as he develops more physically. Ulrey also threw a 71 mph curveball and a 72-74 mph changeup.
2. Matt Pletzke, RHP, Guerin HS: Pletzke (right) showed that he has the makings to be one of the premier prospects in the Class of 2011. With wide shoulders and a strong frame, the 6-foot-3, 215-pound right-hander’s arm works cleanly and with little effort. He showed command and feel for two pitches, including a 71-72 mph slider that has the potential to be a plus pitch. His fastball was an easy 84-85 mph.3. Kyle Schneider, 3B, Penn HS: The 5-foot-10, 180-pound Schneider was one of the event’s top hitters, as he demonstrated an advanced plate approach with a strong, explosive lower half and the ability to drive the ball out of the ball park. Schneider also was sure-handed at third base and a solid arm across the diamond. Schneider ran a 7.16 60.
4. Noah Revis French, OF/IF, FW Carroll HS: The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Revis French (right) is a physically strong left-handed hitter who possesses legitimate power at the plate. Revis French doesn’t get cheated in the box; he has an aggressive approach and the ball jumps off his bat with excellent carry. 5. Cory Colquitt, 1B, Cathedral HS: This 6-foot-1, 190-pound power hitter, who was a starter on the Irish’s 2010 State Runner-up squad, was one of the top ranked hitters at the event. Colquitt is quick and strong to the ball as he drove the ball gap-to-gap.
6. Cole Heberling, C/3B, Anderson HS: The athletically built 6-foot, 185-pound Heberling (right) opened eyes with his arm strength and versatility. He was clocked at 77 mph out of the crouch, as his accurate pop times ranged between 2.09-2.15. Offensively, he has an athletic setup while demonstrating solid hitting mechanics and the ability to drive the ball. 7. Taylor Krugh, RHP, Mishawaka Marian HS: With an athletic frame and a fluid arm, this 6-foot-3, 200-pound right-hander could be another high-level prospect from the Class 3A program. Krugh’s arm works easy while recording an 84-85 mph fastball.
8. Sam Sweeden, SS, Penn HS: The 6-foot, 165-pound Sweeden was the best defensive shortstop at the event. He demonstrated good defensive actions at shortstop, as he fielded the ball with soft hands and a solid arm across the infield. At the plate, he also impressed with an athletic setup and gap-to-gap approach. Sweeden ran a 6.91 60.
9. John Timmerman, SS, FW Carroll HS: This 5-foot-6, 160-pound middle infielder ran an event best 6.88 60. Timmerman (right) was highly ranked as a shortstop and barrels the ball to all fields.10. John Leszczynski, LHP, Mishawaka Marian HS: Leszczynski is a projectable 6-foot-2, 145-pound left-handed pitcher who showcased an easy fluid arm action. Once Leszczynski physically develops he will make a jump in his velocity. He threw a 68-70 mph curve, 72 mph slider, and 73-74 change.
10. Clayton Marrs, RHP Carmel HS: The 6-foot, 200-pound Marrs is a physically strong athlete who possesses an 83 mph fastball with heavy sink. Marrs possesses a 66-69 mph 12-6 curve and 71 mph change. Keep an eye on the development of Marrs.
2012 Top Overall Prospects
1. Jake Lindeman, SS, Crown Point HS: A physically strong, 6-foot, 190-pound athlete, Lindeman once again showed well at a PBR event. The all-around talent, was slowed by a sore arm, but that didn’t stop him from running a 6.89 60 and showcasing bat speed with barrel whip and driving balls with power.
2. Taran Temple, C, Delta HS: Temple (right) showed that he is a Class of 2012 name to remember. With wide shoulders and a strong frame, the 6-foot-1, 212-pound catcher posted 2.10 pop times with a strong arm and good footwork. At the plate, Temple possesses an easy compact swing that sprayed balls all over the field with some power. 3. Andrew Price, RHP/3B, Mishawaka Marian HS: The 6-foot-1, 175-pound Price was one of the most versatile prospect at the event. He performed at a high level in all facets of the game. As a right-handed pitcher, Price impressed with his ability to throw four pitches for strikes (68 mph slider, 63-65 mph curve, 68-69 change and 80 mph fastball). At the plate, Price drove the ball gap-to-gap.
4. Jake Mills, RHP, Cathedral HS: With an athletic build and long legs, the 6-foot-3, 190-pound Mills possesses considerable upside as he physically develops. He demonstrated an 81 mph fastball with a hard 12-6 curve at 67 mph and 72-73 mph change.
4. Andrew Hasler, RHP, Mishawaka Marian HS: This 6-foot-6, 200-pound right-hander proved to be one of the more projectable prospects at the event. Hasler features an athletic frame and fluid arm, which leads us to believe he has more than the 81 mph fastball he showed at the event.
5. Jack Bernacchi, P/1B, Elkhart Central HS: Bernacchi (right) showed well at the plate. Offensively, he is short, quick and strong to the ball as he hit line drives all over the field. He has a quiet, fundamentally sound approach and displayed excellent bat control. 5. Bobby Norell, SS/P, Mishawaka Marian HS: The 5-foot-7, 175-pound Norell performed well in all facets. He moved fluidly at shortstop with a solid arm across the field. At the plate, he attacks the ball with sound mechanics and a quick line-drive producing swing. On the mound, Norell threw 82 mph.
2013-2014 Top Overall Prospects
1. Neal Dowling, C, SB St. Joseph’s HS, 2013: The left-handed hitting Dowling has the tools to be the next catcher for the Indians program. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Dowling (right) showed solid footwork behind the dish. At the plate, he demonstrated a fundamental, gap-to-gap with power approach from the left side.2. Josh Turnock, C, Mishawaka Marian HS, 2014: This 5-foot-9, 150-pound left-handed hitting catcher is one of the best hitters we’ve seen in the Class of 2014. Turnock also performed well behind the plate and at third.
3. Jake Mullins, P/OF, Elkhart Central HS, 2013: Keep an eye on this 5-foot-10, 150-pound left-hander in the coming years. With a projectable frame and a loose arm, Mullins should see a significant velocity spike in the future as he fills out.
